ROME – The Lady Hawks picked up their 11th straight set victory for the season against Union, the fourth straight set win in a row – which includes three against Gulf South Conference rivals.
Shorter (20-5, 10-4 GSC) claimed a victory that was never in doubt, as the Lady Hawks led the entire first set and only trailed at the start of the next two sets when Union was able to record points early in the set. Shorter was able to claim the sets 25-17, 25-17, 25-15. This was the second match up between the newest GSC schools; Shorter had another straight set victory in Jackson, Tenn. when they played on September 27th.
Leslie Welch was the leader with 15 kills while hitting .700; both numbers were the tops for either team.
The Lady Hawks outhit the visiting Lady Bulldogs .429 to .157, which includes a match high .467 in the deciding third set.
Jordan Corder had 39 assists, a number that outpaced the visiting team – as they were only able to tally 25 for the match.
Tanequa Whitman added 10 digs, with Corder pitching in with eight more.
Union (4-24, 1-13 GSC) came in on the heels of a 10 match losing streak, received top play from Linsey Mirtsching – 14 assists – and Elise Seufert – 10 digs.
The Lady Hawks are back in action tomorrow at 7 pm when another GSC opponent – North Alabama – comes to the Winthrop-King Centre for the first time this season, the Lady Hawks are 7-2 at home this season. The game will be a rematch of the September 28th contest that saw the Lions win in four sets on their court.
