CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- In a matchup of two longtime rivals, the Shorter volleyball team fell to Lee, 25-17, 20-25, 19-25, 20-25, in a matchup versus the Lady Hawks' former Southern States Athletic Conference rival. The 3-1 loss drops their record to 13-3 on the season, with this the first non-conference loss.
Sophomore Jasmine Crook turned in another double double with 16 kills and 10 digs. Senior middle blocker Leslie Welch finished with nine kills and five blocks, while sophomore middle blocker Anna Graham added 14 kills and two blocks.
Senior setter Jordan Corder tallied 40 assists and 10 digs. Senior defensive specialist Tanequa Whitman collected 13 digs for the Lady Hawks. Freshman Dena Pierce added 10 digs. Shorter was outhit by Lee, .221 to .193.
The match started with the teams trading points in the first set, but once the score read 15-10 SU, the Lady Hawks were able to pull away to collect the first set, 25-17.
Lee was able to outhit Shorter the rest of the match on the way to collecting the next three sets.
The Lady Hawks return home for the next two matches against GSC opponents.
West Florida will be in town on October 13 for a 1:30 pm start. This will be a rematch of the first loss of the season when Shorter lost 3-0 on September 15 at West Florida.
Valdosta State will visit the Winthrop-King Centre on October 14 for a 3 pm game time. Shorter visited Valdosta State on September 13 and left with a 3-2 victory.
