ROME – After jumping out to a 2-0 lead at home, the Shorter Lady Hawks were able to come back and take the deciding fifth set for the first Gulf South Conference home victory versus West Alabama.

Shorter (8-1, 2-1 Gulf South) looked to be in cruise control after positing a second set score of 25-14, but dropped the next two sets to end up in a fifth set to decide the match. In that set, the Lady Hawks were able to outlast the Tigers 16-14 in front of a rowdy crowd energized from the Homecoming festivities.

Jasmine Crook continued her assault by leading the squad with 17 kills; Jennifer Campbell and Leslie Welch were next on the chart with 10 apiece. Welch stood at the top of the hitting percentage column with an impressive .350, which was the top for either team.

Tanequa Whitman added 27 digs, with Jordan Corder getting 18 and Crook accumulating 10; while Corder added to her assist totals with 53.

West Alabama (9-4, 2-2 Gulf South) had come into town with a modest two-match winning streak, with victories over North Alabama and Montevallo. Tonight was the first of three games in three days on the road as they head to Alabama-Huntsville and then to West Georgia.

The Lady Hawks are off for a few days, with the next match set for September 27 at Union. That will start a three game in three-day trip as Shorter visits North Alabama (1-7, 0-1 Gulf South) and Christian Brothers (6-3, 1-0 Gulf South).
