Softball wins NCCAA South Region Championship

Central, S.C.—The Lady Hawks are one step closer to the NCCAA National Championship; winning the South Region Championship over Southern Wesleyan, 4-0, Tuesday afternoon.

After completing the shutout yesterday, 7-0, Shorter faced off against Southern Wesleyan once more en route to the championship win. The Warriors defeated Point University, 9-6, earlier in the day to advance to the final.

The Lady Hawks scored three runs in the second to take the lead. Whitney Hood singled to lead off the inning, and came around to score as Janell Echols grounded out to third base. Kendall Johnson reached base on a single, and then scored on the RBI single from Kayla Cooper. With Jackie Castaneda batting, Cooper scored on a wild pitch to put Shorter up 3-0.

In the sixth, Kristen Little, who came into the game to pinch run for Bre Johnson scored on wild pitch for the 4-0 final score.

Christina Ezell pitched the complete game gem for the Lady Hawks; allowing just one hit and a walk, with nine strikeouts. Allison Parker was tagged with the loss for Southern Wesleyan; allowing two earned runs on six hits, with two strikeouts.

Cooper finished the day with two hits and an RBI. Bre Johnson, Castaneda, Hood and Kendall Johnson each recorded a hit for Shorter.

Felicia Morris, Maddie Bray, Cooper, Ezell, and Castaneda were all named to the NCCAA All-South Team; while head coach Al Thomas was named South Region Coach of the Year.

With the win, the Lady Hawks advance to the NCCAA Softball National Championship Tournament hosted by Bluefield College in Botetourt County, Va. May 9-11. Check for the latest details.
