Johnson's grand slam gives softball the split with Delta State

ROME, Ga.—Softball earned the split with Delta State Friday afternoon. Falling game one 6-4, and winning game two 6-3.

Delta State scored first to go up 1-0 in the opener in the third inning, and added three more in the in the fifth to make it a 4-0 game. Lady Statesman starter, Miller Maddox, held Shorter hitless until Jackie Castaneda connected on a single in sixth inning; opening up a four hit, 2-run inning for the Lady Hawks. Amanda Dailey added a single, followed by an RBI single from Sarah Corn and an RBI single from Whitney Hood.

The Lady Hawks added two runs in the seventh to tie the game at 4-4. Felicia Morris singled to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI single from Castaneda; Dailey brought in the final run with her second hit of the day. The Lady Statesmen sealed the win in the seventh on a 2 RBI single from Kaitlin Moore.

Maddox recorded the win for Delta State; tossing six innings, allowing three runs on five hits, with two strikeouts. Christina Ezell picked up her first loss of the season for Shorter, going 7.2 innings and giving up twelve hits and six runs, while striking out nine.

In game 2, the Lady Hawks scored two in the third to take the lead; Kendall Johnson and Morris each reached base, followed by an RBI single from Kayla Cooper, and Castaneda brought in a run on a fly out.

Delta State scored one in the fifth to cut the lead in half, and added to in the sixth to go ahead 3-2. However, the Lady Hawks earned the win with four runs in the seventh. With two outs, Morris walked; Cooper was hit by a pitch, followed by a walk from Castaneda. It was Bre Johnson who delivered the final blow; a grand slam homerun that give Shorter the 6-3 win.

Kayla Byrom earned the win for Shorter, after coming on in relief of Kristen Little; who went 5.2 innings, gave up three runs on four hits, with four strikeouts. Byrom, went 1.2 innings, no runs on two hits, while striking out one. Brittany Gonzalez picked up the loss for Delta State; going 6.2 innings, allowing 7 hits and six runs, while walking five and striking out one.

Bre Johnson went 2-3 with four RBI in the finale, after going 0-4 in the opener. Castaneda finish 2-3 with three walks and an RBI.

The Lady Hawks return to action tomorrow, March 30, with a doubleheader against Christian Brothers. Games are set to begin at 1:00pm.
