SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The Shorter softball team grabbed the second victory in two days versus No. 20 Armstrong Atlantic, defeating the Pirates in extra innings, 3-2.

The Lady Hawks (2-1) got on the scoreboard first in the home half of the second inning when Bre Johnson led the inning off with a solo homerun to left center field.

No scoring occurred until the top of the seventh when the Pirates Ashley Schwab scored three batters after reaching on a fielder's choice to tie the game, 1-1.

Shorter was unable to score in the bottom of the inning, bringing on international tie breaker rules – each team starts their inning with a runner on second base.

Armstrong Atlantic (9-2) plated their run when Andrea Dalton dropped a sacrifice bunt with the runner on third to move ahead, 2-1. Kayla Byrom retired the next two batters to send the game to the bottom of the eighth with the Lady Hawks down by a run.

The home half of the inning lasted one batter as Kendall Johnson launched a 2-run home run to right center field giving the Lady Hawks the walk off 3-2 victory in eight innings.

The Lady Hawks managed six hits off of Pirate pitching, with Kayla Cooper twice reaching on a hit. Maddie Bray pitched seven innings while allowing only the one unearned run while striking out one batter.

Byrom came into the game and pitched one inning in relief to pick up the victory.

Shorter will play Mars Hill this afternoon to finish play from the Hampton Inn North Invitational.
