LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Lady Hawks picked a fine time to score their first goals of the season as they traveled to West Alabama and, after being shut out twice last weekend, picked up a 3-2 victory in double overtime.

The scoring in the game was back and forth, seeing the Tigers start the scoring when Nicki Gears scored in the 13th minute. The game stayed 1-0 through the end of the first half.

Jessica Wright evened the match with her first goal of the season when Brandi Greenwald assisted on her goal in the 54th minute. Nine minutes later, West Alabama took the advantage back to 2-1 when Gears struck again for her seventh goal already on the season. Helena Farinha tied the match for Shorter in the 66th minute on an unassisted goal, which is where the game would stand through the end of regulation.

The first overtime period saw West Alabama have two header attempts as the only shots for the period, one being saved by Taylor Hays in goal and the other sailing wide left.

Double overtime started and was over very quickly. Three minutes into the period a long pass was played down the sideline for Kelli Davis and she made her run count by dribbling only once and shooting from outside the 18-yard box. The shot went over the keeper and tucked in just under the crossbar giving the Lady Hawks the victory.

Davis was active all night long leading the team with four shots, followed by Aline Bez Tamiosso's three.

This was the first loss of the season for West Alabama (2-1), after scoring 19 totals goals in their prior two games. The victory also signifies the first time the Lady Hawks have beaten a Gulf South Conference opponent, although this, the first of two matchups between the teams this season, did not count as a conference game.

The Lady Hawks (1-2) are at home next, on September 11, as they host Columbus State at 7 pm.
