Women's Soccer drops 1-0 decision at Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. -- Valdosta State's Kim Caitlin Alderman notched the game's only goal midway through the first half as the host Blazers held on for a 1-0 victory over Shorter in a non-league women's soccer matchup between two Gulf South Conference clubs on Sunday afternoon.

The win is Valdosta State's (10-1-1) fourth in a row as the Blazers, who currently sit in third place in the GSC standings, remained unbeaten through their last six outings.

The Lady Hawks (2-9-1) lost a fourth game this season by a one-goal margin. Shorter has also been on the short end of one-goal decisions against Palm Beach Atlantic (1-0), Christian Brothers (3-2) and West Georgia (2-1).

The Blazers got on the scoreboard in the 22nd minute when Caroline Moore found Alderman down the left flank from Valdosta State's defensive third. Alderman's blast beat Shorter keeper Katie Stachula just inside the right post for a 1-0 Valdosta State lead.

Valdosta State kept Shorter in check by allowing just two shots to the Lady Hawks, one in each half, and taking 19 attempts of its own. The Blazers forced Stachula into three saves in order to keep her Shorter side within striking distance for the entire 90 minutes.

Brandi Greenwald and Aline Bez Tamiosso registered Shorter's lone shots on the afternoon. Neither was on target, however, as Shorter now looks ahead to a rematch with Valdosta State on October 22 at Ben Brady Field, a game that will count in the Gulf South Conference standings.

Shorter played without veteran midfielder Jessica Wright, a key cog in Shorter's system who is nursing concussion symptoms. Kalley Estep started in Wright's place while Kaity Potter, who suffered a severe knee injury last season, made her second straight appearance after making her 2012 debut in Shorter's outing against West Georgia on Friday.

The Lady Hawks will take a week off before returning to the pitch on Sunday, October 14 when they play host to Gulf South Conference rival and No. 14-ranked North Alabama at Ben Brady Field. Kick-off against North Alabama is set for 2 pm.
