MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -- The Shorter women's lacrosse team heads north on Saturday and Sunday, March 16 and 17, for a pair of non-league matchups with Mount Olive College and Chowan University.
The Lady Hawks (6-2), ranked No. 2 nationally in the latest National Women's Lacrosse League Coaches' Poll, have won three straight heading into this weekend's action, having defeated NWLL foes Emmanuel, No. 4-ranked St. Andrews and No. 9-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan in consecutive outings.
Shorter's Avery Armstrong leads a balanced Lady Hawks' attack in both goals (22) and overall points (27). Armstrong also paces Shorter in draw controls (30) and ranks second on the team with 24 ground balls.
Rachel Skinner (15 G, 6 A), Mia Wiggins (13 G, 2 A) and Shelby Beverly (10 G) have each recorded double digit points for third-year head coach Brittni Dulaney, who won her 30th career game in Shorter's victory over Tennessee Wesleyan on Wednesday.
Beverly, Bethany Fevella, Desiree' Watson-Isom and Kari Chambers have been excellent on the defensive side of the field for Shorter. Combined, the foursome has caused 46 turnovers with Fevella leading the way with 14. Beverly leads Shorter with 25 ground balls.
In goal for Shorter, Taylor Moody boasts a solid 8.87 goals against average while having made 59 saves. Aggressive between the pipes, Moody has also caused six turnovers and scooped up 13 ground balls.
Shorter has a big challenge on Saturday in Mount Olive, one of the best programs in Conference Carolinas. The Trojans (5-4) enter Saturday's game having won two in a row and four of five. Riann Daziel has been unstoppable for Mount Olive, racking up 33 points in eight games with the help of 26 goals. Kara Lyon has chipped in with 15 goals and 23 points. Daziel and Lyon have accounted for nearly half of Mount Olive's goals.
The Lady Hawks close out the two-day road trip against Chowan, a team that has struggled to a 1-7 mark at the midway point of the season. The Hawks were shut out in their last outing, 22-0 by Florida Southern, and have dropped three straight. Chowan has been outscored 133-29 on the season and Mackenzie Reid has netted 16 of her team's goals.
