ROME -- After two days of competition, including some unfavorable weather on Tuesday, the Shorter women's golf team placed second in the Rome News-Tribune Invitational hosted by Berry College at Coosa Country Club.
Maria Bengtsson, a sophomore from Sweden, led the Shorter scoring as she took third place overall by shooting 78-76-154 (+10). Joining Bengtsson in the top 10 was Isabella Baldacci in eighth place with a two-round tally of 77-79-156 (+12).
Rounding out the team for the Lady Hawks was Rachel Butler with rounds of 78-82-160 (+16) in 16th, Claudia Orrantia in 20th by shooting 77-86-163 (+19), and Pauline Schopp, who ended up 29th with round totals of 80-86-166 (+22).
Overall, there were 75 competitors on the course from 12 schools.
Lee University was crowned tournament champion with team scores of 305-310-615, finishing 18 strokes ahead of the Lady Hawks (310-323-633). Lee's roster included overall champion Courtney Shelton 73-74-147 (+3) along with two other top 10 finishers.
Tournament host Berry College took home sixth place honors.
The Lady Hawks entered a pair of golfers as unattached competitors. Amanda Schwartz shot 84-84-168 (+24) as part of a 31st place finish and Alyson Hicks (185) finished the two-day event in 55th place.
The Lady Hawks are back in competition on March 17 from Achasta Golf Course in Dahlonega, Ga., as they take on North Georgia.
