Duncan leads Hawks at Newberry Open

NEWBERRY, S.C. -- The Shorter wrestling program participated in the Newberry Open, sending nine wrestlers to participate in 10 weight classes.

T.J. Duncan took third place in the 157-pound class. Duncan would start his tournament off with a pin of Cole Dodd (Chattanooga) in 1:00, before pinning Michael Swindell (Newberry) in 51 seconds. Duncan would be defeated in the third round by eventual class champion Kyle Ash (Gardner-Webb) via the 16-4 decision. Duncan would take the next two matches by way of the decision, including a rematch versus Swindell in the third place match.

Others wrestling for the Hawks were Jonathan Rodriguez (133-pound; 2-2), Joshua Lansdell (141-pound; 2-2), Brandon Dyer (141-pound; 2-2), Jesse Jones (141-pound; 1-2), Andrew Broome (165-pound; 1-2), Jared Rector (174-pound; 1-2), John Hoyt (197-pound; 1-2), and Ryan Lauderbaugh (285-pound; 1-2).

The Hawks will return to the mat later this week, wrestling against Brewton-Parker from Mount Vernon, Ga. on February 5 with a 7 pm start time.
