LEBANON, Tenn. -- The Shorter wrestling team completed in the Cumberland Open over the weekend, with several members posting strong outings.
The Hawks would enter four members in the 141-pound weight class, with Brandon Dyer making it to the third place match to lead the bunch. Dyer would lose his opening match, and then set out on a four match winning streak that included pins over Jared Reece (2:19) and Joshua Lansdell (1:26) and a major decision (12-0) over Caleb Perkins before Marcus Cobbs would forfeit. Dyer would face Jake Smith for the third place title, with Smith claiming the victory via pin at 1:11.
Also in the weight class were Lansdell (1-2), Jesse Jones (1-2), and Demarcus Thomas (0-2).
T.J. Duncan would claim third place in the 157-pound weight class. He would advance through the first round via bye, before beating Cole Dodd via pin (0:30) and Zach Cope with the technical fall (19-3) before losing the 3-2 decision to eventual runner-up Michael Gonzalez. Duncan would come back to win his final two matches to claim third place honors.
The Hawks would place two other members of the team in the third place match for the weight classes, Jared Rector (174) and Joseph Hinchman (184) would each fall short in their final matches of the meet.
The Hawks will return to the mat on January 27 in the Georgia Collegiate Invitational from Marietta, Ga.
