INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Shorter wrestling program participated in the 34th annual Midwest Classic hosted by the University of Indianapolis over the weekend. The Hawks were represented in seven weight classes over the two days of competition.
Gabriel Bird went 4-2 over the two days in the 149-pound weight class, with both losses coming to Jan Ulinski from Findlay. Ulinski was able to win the first match-up of the tournament via pin at 1:49. Bird would win three consecutive matches in the wrestle back via decision; 12-9, 3-1, 3-2, to set up the rematch. Ulinski would take the second meeting by the 5-3 decision, sending Bird to the seventh place match. Bird would take the match, thanks to the 9-3 decision over Cody Cole from Western State for the seventh place finish.
Chris Rowland won his opening match for the 285-pound class over Kaden Suter from Campbellsville. Rowland would take the match by decision, 6-1, before bowing out in the wrestle back with losses to Chris Giddens from UNC-Pembroke and Zotaih Tuaquoi from Central Missouri.
Shorter's wrestlers are back on the mat on January 19 when they compete in the Cumberland Open in Lebanon, Tenn.
