ROME -- The Shorter tennis teams took to the Walt Attaway Tennis Complex for the first time this season, doing so as host to Gulf South Conference for Valdosta State, with VSU claiming the 6-3 victory in both matches.
The Lady Hawks (5-6) picked up a point in doubles play when the Lady Blazers were unable to compete in the third match-up against the duo of Alicia Gallard/Aurore Beltrando.
Candice Laurent picked up the win at the top singles match, 7-6, 7-6, against Michelle Fischer. Laurent now has back-to-back victories, and stands at 7-2 on the season in singles action. Gallard was awarded the forfeit victory at No. 6 singles with the Lady Blazers not entering a competitor.
The Hawks (5-5) were swept in doubles competition, picking up three wins in singles play.
Marc Guerry picked up the 6-4, 6-4 win in the third slot against Mario Navarro, Guerry has won his last three matches and is 3-1 in GSC play this year.
Arturo Lifshitz was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at No. 5 versus Tammo Haake for his first win against a GSC opponent.
Robert Watson won the final point for the Hawks with a 2-6, 6-2, 10-8 win over Andrew Harvin. This was Watson's first singles match of the season; he has been playing doubles from the No. 2 spot most of the season with Colt Kelley.
The tennis teams are back at home tomorrow against West Florida, another GSC foe, for a 10 am start.
