ROME -- In a home matchup between the Shorter Hawks and the NAIA's No.-2 ranked Hornets of Southern Poly, the Hawks were able to shake off an early goal to win the game, 2-1.
After giving up a goal in the 15th minute, Ryan Edwards stood strong in goal and registered a total of seven saves for the game. Diego Gonzalez scored both goals for Shorter and Robert Ochieng assisted on each. Irvin Espinal also assisted on Gonzalez's first goal in the 33rd minute, a goal that tied the game and brought the momentum to the Hawks sideline.
The Hawks took advantage of their opportunities to score, despite being outshot 16-8. "This is a big win for the program and can go a long way," said Shorter head coach Paulo Neto.
After going down a goal early, the Hawks responded behind Gonzalez. He scored first just before halftime to send the game into the break knotted at 1. Gonzalez struck again with just over 14 minutes left for what proved to be the game winner.
The win now has the Hawks at 1-0-1 on the season, as they get ready for two games this upcoming weekend. On Friday, September 7, the Hawks will play Carson-Newman (0-2); and on Sunday, September 9, they square off against Tusculum (1-1). Both games are part of the Stanno Tournament in Greeneville, Tennessee.
