ROME -- In the final home game of the season for the Shorter men's soccer team, they left Ben Brady Field with a 5-1 victory over Gulf South Conference rival Alabama-Huntsville.
The action started quick for Shorter (4-11-1, 3-4-1 GSC) when Kyle Stonecipher was able to score his second goal of the season in the ninth minute.
Irvin Espinal added a goal in the 39th minute to help the Hawks build a 2-0 halftime lead.
The second half saw Robert Ochieng also register his second goal of the season off of the Espinal assist in the 66th minute, Diego Gonzalez was able to score in the 85th minute with another Espinal assist.
To cap the scoring, Espinal added his second goal of the game in the 85th minute. For the game he was able to tally two goals, and two assists. The numbers gained tonight push the season totals to eight goals and six assists.
Ryan Edwards got the start in goal and made a save on each of the four shots he faced while playing the first 73 minutes of the match, before surrendering his post to Austen Trevers for the final 18 minutes of the match.
Shorter was able to outshoot Alabama-Huntsville (1-13, 0-10 GSC) by a 21-15 margin, as the Hawks were able to control the pace of the game and forced action on the Chargers side of the field for the majority of the game.
The season finishes up this week for the team, with trips to two more GSC foes. First up is West Alabama on October 26 for a 7 pm start. Two days later, on October 28, the Hawks take the field at West Florida with a 3 pm start time.
