Men's Lax blows past Emmanuel, 20-5

ROME -- Kyle VanKauwenberg scored five goals, Zachery Dirkse added four and Shorter outscored visiting Emmanuel 16-1 over the final three quarters en route to a 20-5 victory over the Lions on Saturday at Ben Brady Field.

The win improves Shorter to 3-7 overall while Emmanuel drops to 1-9. The Hawks also evened their record to 2-2 on Ben Brady Field this season.

After a 4-4 deadlock in the first quarter, the Hawks picked matters up on both ends of the field, outscoring Emmanuel 13-0 in the middle quarters to take a commanding lead.

Shorter scored the game's first three goals before Emmanuel closed the first period on a 3-1 run to tie the game at 4. From that point, VanKauwenberg's second goal of the game sparked a streak of 16 unanswered tallies for the Hawks, who didn't allow another goal until 1:05 remained in the fourth quarter.

VanKauwenberg scored three times in the decisive second quarter while James VandenBrink added two strikes as Shorter netted seven in the second to take an 11-4 lead into halftime.

Matt Kristiansen, who finished with three goals and three assists, posted all of his tallies and one assist during a 6-0 Shorter third period that put the Hawks up 17-4 after three quarters. Shorter outshot Emmanuel 35-13 in the middle frames to seize control of the game.

For the afternoon, Shorter outshot Emmanuel 55-33 and forced 30 turnovers by the Lions, who went scoreless for 46:57 as the Hawks built their lead. Shorter's man down unit was superb, holding the Lions scoreless on 11 man-up opportunities, including a stretch at the end of the third quarter when the Hawks played two men down.

VandenBrink added three goals and Benjamin Janes a goal and two assists for Shorter. Dirkse scooped up a team high six ground balls in addition to handing out a pair of assists and J.R. Willers made eight saves in net.

Shorter takes the field in its final home game of 2013 next Friday, March 29, when it plays host to Reinhardt at 7 pm on Ben Brady Field.
