By Matt Green

ROME – Visiting Wheeling Jesuit used three goals apiece from Tyler Buchan and Tyler Wickett and outscored Shorter 9-2 in the first half en route to a 21-4 victory over the Hawks in non-league men's lacrosse action at Ben Brady Field on Saturday afternoon.

The win improves Wheeling Jesuit, which is receiving votes in the NCAA Division II Men's Lacrosse Rankings, to 5-2 on the year. Shorter, which has played one of the toughest schedules in D-II thus far in 2013, dropped its second straight game and falls to 2-4 on the year.

Shorter trailed just 3-1 after the first quarter, as Tyler Kristiansen scored with 2:36 left in the period to stop a three-goal scoring run by the Cardinals.

Wheeling Jesuit used two straight man-up goals to open up a 5-2 lead at the 11:54 mark of the second quarter, and after Andrew King struck for Shorter with 5:56 left until halftime to trim the Hawks' deficit to 6-2, Wheeling Jesuit scored the final three goals of the half to go into the break up 9-2.

The guests' run continued in the second half, as Wheeling Jesuit outscored Shorter 4-0 in the third period and got a goal from Jared Baronowski to open the fourth quarter to extend its lead to 14-2. Matt Kristiansen and Kyle Morris scored for Shorter in the fourth, but the Hawks never crept closer than 11 goals as Wheeling Jesuit closed out the win.

The Cardinals outshot Shorter 46-27 and held a 50-43 advantage in ground balls. The Cardinals also won 18 of 29 face offs to help them control the tempo.

Shorter freshman goalie J.R. Willers made 12 stops in net for the Hawks while facing 33 shots that found the target. Joshua Skinner paced Shorter with seven ground balls while Tyler Kristiansen added two assists to his goal on the day.

Shorter returns to action on Wednesday, March 13 when they play host to Mars Hill in a game that will take place at Lambert High School in Marietta. Game time is set for 7 pm.
