BOONE, N.C. -– A fourth quarter offensive explosion breaks a tie and the Hawks pick up their first win of the season at Lees-McRae, 14-9.
Kyle VanKauwenberg provided a pair of goals in the first quarter as part of a three goal quarter for the Hawks, taking the early 3-1 lead.
The second quarter saw nine goals scored between the two teams, five of which by the home team. Shorter (1-2) got scores from Matt Kristiansen, VanKauwenberg, Kyle Morris, and Kristiansen again. The Hawks were able to enter halftime with the 7-6 lead.
VanKauwenberg registered his fourth and final goal of the game late in the third quarter to tie the game, 8-8, after Lees-McRae (0-5) had taken the lead.
Patrick Foy scored twice in a six goal fourth quarter as Shorter was able to pull away from the home team. Kristiansen added his third goal of the game in the fourth, while Andrew King, Benjamin Janes, and James VandenBrink capped the scoring for the day.
J.R. Willers made 12 saves while facing 42 shots, 21 of which were on goal.
The Hawks defense was able to force 28 turnovers from the Bobcats, while picking up 42 ground balls. Shorter was able to win 15 of 27 face offs, while going 25-for-30 on clear attempts.
Jeff White scored four times for Lees-McRae, while also picking up an assist, on a day where he attempted 17 shots and picked up six ground balls. Ryan Sparks got to eight ground balls for a game-high, while Ryan Harrison faced 30 shots and was able to make 16 saves.
The Hawks will be back at home on the turf of Ben Brady Field on March 2, hosting Alderson-Broaddus, with the game set to begin at 3 pm.
