CHARLOTTE -- Freshman Jarrad Hinds scored a career-high five goals to lead Shorter University to an 18-15 win over the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in men's lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon in Charlotte.
Hinds added an assist in his second collegiate game -- the five goals were the first of his career -- and Michael Matthews added three goals and three assists as the Hawks (1-1) claimed their first win of the 2012 season after falling on Friday night in their season opener.
Kyle Van Kauwenberg had three goals and two assists, Jordan Butz chipped in with three goals and one helper and Kyle Morris dished out three assists for the Hawks, who fired 34 shots. The 49ers unleashed 39 shots on the day, but Shorter's goalie tandem of Erik Carson and Matthew Eason combined for 13 saves and made just enough stops to help the Hawks prevail.
Shorter will close out its season-opening, three-game road trip on Monday at 4 pm when it travels to Greensboro, N.C., to take on NCAA Division III member Guilford College. Guilford is a member of the prestigious Old Dominion Athletic Conference and defeated Shorter last season.
