ROME -- The Hawks look forward to their upcoming Gulf South Conference contest against the Union University Bulldogs. It is an opportunity for the Hawks to win a fifth straight conference victory. It is the first season both Shorter and Union play under the GSC banner. At this point of the season the Hawks are flying high with the conference's top opponents, the same cannot be said of the Bulldogs as they struggle against the heightened Division II talent.

The Hawks beat the North Alabama Lions Thursday night 80-73; 49 of the team's 80 points were scored in the second half.  It was another impressive victory for Shorter. Dedric Ware led both teams in points (21) and assists (8), while Walter Hill led the Hawks in rebounds (10). The Hawks gained momentum by adding fast break points off of 19 turnovers with Anthony Banks putting in 18 points Thursday night. A one-point margin five minutes left in the ball game kept it close, that is until the Hawks took advantage of a 20-14 run to secure the victory.

Union faced a bigger challenge Thursday night playing GSC leader, No. 9 Alabama-Huntsville Chargers at home in Jackson, Tenn. The Bulldogs played a tight first half and only allowed the Chargers a two point break going to the locker room 30-28. After the half the Chargers clicked into form as they have all season and rarely allowed the Bulldogs to pull within 10 points; the final score was 78-62.

Bulldogs Anthony Freeman Jr., Corieon Pearson, AJ Roberts and Roy Bullock III all average double digits this season; with the offense averaging 70 points a game. The Bulldogs feature a lot of youth, something Union has to be happy about as they watch these young men develop in the new conference realignment. Freeman and Daniel Marti are the lone seniors playing for the Bulldogs.

The inaugural GSC season has been a challenge for both the Hawks and Bulldogs. The Hawks have shown their senior leadership can hang with the very best in the GSC, while the Bulldogs are building a foundation into the conference with a majority of young talent.
