ROME – The Shorter Hawks will put an undefeated home record on the line as Christian Brothers visits the Winthrop-King Centre for a Gulf South Conference game.
The Hawks are coming off of defeating GSC foe Delta State from the Winthrop-King Centre on Thursday, 63-53. The Hawks shook off a low scoring first half, scoring just 28 points despite shooting 40 percent from the field, to lead the entire game.
Both teams would shoot an identical 12-for-24 in the second half, with Shorter claiming the advantage from the free throw line. The Hawks would connect on 80 percent of their free throws versus 67 percent for Delta State.
Shorter would dominate in the paint with the 28-16 advantage, while also picking up 20 points off of 20 Statesmen turnovers. Terry Leake, the leading scorer in the GSC at 20.5 points per game, was held to 14 points on 5-for-13 shooting.
Christian Brothers comes in having most recently been defeated by No. 3 Alabama-Huntsville on Thursday, 71-61.
The Bucs stayed with the high-powered Chargers throughout, using a 12-0 run early in the second half to stake a 40-34 lead on a pair of Michael Drake free throws with 13:45 remaining. They kept their lead steady until just before the 10-minute mark, when UAH made the decisive run. UAH connected on four consecutive 3-point shots during a 12-0 run to take a 52-45 lead with 8:03 remaining. The Bucs never came closer than four points again, and the Chargers put it out of reach as two Wayne Dedrick threes keyed a 9-1 burst to extend the lead to 67-54 with 3:07 remaining.
Drake led the Bucs with 14 points and six rebounds, and Drew Hildreth continued his strong play with 13 points off the bench. Ryan Fleming added 11 points and two blocks.
CBU has four players averaging double digits in scoring on the season, Drake (13.8), Cory McArthy (12.3), Harry Green (11.6), and Trey Casey (10.4). Pat Graham is the top Buc on the boards, averaging 5.2 rebounds per game.
CBU is averaging 68.7 points per game, while allowing the opposition to average 61.4. Shorter is averaging 85.4 points per contest (scoring over 90 points seven times) while yielding 73.6 points per game on defense.
