ROME - The Shorter Hawks continue to find their place in the Gulf South Conference after an impressive 75-69 victory over the Valdosta State Blazers January 5. Thursday night the Hawks match up to face their next GSC opponent, the Delta State Statesmen.

The Hawks are flying high after a solid win over the Blazers. Walter Hill was the leading scorer with 28 points, while Brandon Wright counted 11 rebounds off the boards. The Hawks were able to win each important statistical battle, including field goal percentage, rebounds, and turnovers in the strong win in Valdosta. The Statesmen are coming off a tough home court loss to GSC rival North Alabama, falling 69-53.

Despite a late start in the 2012-2013 season Hill's presence has been felt, his leadership and skills set have helped him carry 19 point average in his first five games back this season. It will be interesting to find out how Hill compares to Delta State shooting guard Terry Leake, a pick on the 2012 Preseason All-GSC Team. Leake's average of 20.5 points per game is the highest in the conference; he's also the Statesmen leading rebounder with 10.3 per game.

The Hawks are now closing in on the midway point and have maintained an undefeated record at home, going 5-0 on the court of the Winthrop King Centre. The Statesmen come to Rome looking for their first road win of the season. The final 14 games on the schedule are all GSC games; with eight of the remaining games to take place in Rome.

The Hawks average 87 points of offense per contest and give up only 72 on defense. The Statesmen's leading scorer Leake on average gains a third of his team's 60 offensive points, while their defense has given up 61 points. The Hawks on the season have shot 47.5 percent from the floor; while the Statesmen have hit 42 percent of the field goal attempts.
