ROME – The Shorter University men’s basketball program announced today the signing of Robert Powell to its 2013-14 recruiting class.
Powell, a 6-foot-5 swingman, will transfer to Shorter next fall after a standout career under head coach Corey Baldwin at Waycross Junior College.
“We are so excited to add Robert to our family,” said Shorter head coach Chad Warner, whose Hawks finished 21-11 in their first year at the NCAA Division II level within the Gulf South Conference this past season, capping the year by winning the NCCAA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship.
“He was a player that we targeted early and spent a lot of time recruiting,” Warner added. “We were the first school to offer him a scholarship and we did so because we loved how hard he played and how efficient he was as a player.”
Powell was named as a Top 150 JUCO Player to Watch by the JUCO Journal. During his sophomore season at Waycross, Powell turned in a team-high 15 double-doubles and recorded double digit rebounds in 18 games. His energy and athleticism fits the mold of Shorter’s high-tempo, high-octane style.
Powell joins a Shorter team that has won 20 or more games in each of the last three seasons. The Hawks won a school record 34 games during the 2011-12 campaign on their way to the NAIA Fab Four before bursting onto the NCAA Division II scene this year by finishing near the top of the GSC.
Powell is looking forward to helping continue Shorter’s rise.
“I am excited to be going to Shorter and I appreciated the way the coaches recruited me,” Powell said. “The campus was great as well as the professors, students and teammates. I hope I can help continue the success of the program.”
