Lakeland, Fla.—Baseball won its first two games at the NCCAA South Region Tournament hosted by Southeastern University in Lakeland, Fla. Tuesday afternoon. The first was a 3-0 victory over Point University, and the second a 3-2 win over Palm Beach Atlantic.
In Game 1, the Hawks scored three runs in the first inning to take the lead. All three runs came after two were retired; Cal Hardie struck out to begin the inning, followed by a single from Dustin Evans and a walk to Willie Lewis. Walker Borneman also struck out, but Michael Miranda delivered a 2 RBI double to extend the inning, and came around to score on an RBI single from Jacob Forrest.
The runs proved to be enough as Shorter held Point scoreless.
Stuart Charleston earned the win for the Hawks; pitching the complete game, allowing just two hits, while striking out eight. Corey Thompson was tagged with the loss for the Skyhawks; allowing three runs on six hits, with four walks and five strikeouts, over seven innings of work.
In Game 2, Shorter scored twice in the first inning to take the lead over Palm Beach Atlantic. The Hawks had the two out magic working once again; with two out and Evans and Lewis on base, Miranda connected on a 2 RBI single to once again extend the inning.
Shorter added a run in the fifth to make it a 3-0 game, as Dustin Hayes scored on an RBI ground out from Lewis. The Sailfish scored in the sixth to make it a 3-2 game and end the scoreless streak, as Andres Vasquez delivered an RBI single and Ryan Drew scored on a wild pitch.
Cameron Rich picked up the win for the Hawks; pitching 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, with two strikeouts. Eric Doty earned the save; allowing two hits, with three strikeouts over 1.2 innings of work. Nic Kovacs recorded the loss for Palm Beach Atlantic; allowing three runs on six hits, with eight strikeouts.
Miranda finished the day with three hits and four RBI for Shorter.
The Hawks will be back in action tomorrow, May 8, as they take on Southeastern. Game time is set for 6:00pm.
