ROME, Ga. –The Shorter Hawks Baseball team completed the four game season sweep of Albany State; winning both games on Tuesday afternoon. The scores were 5-4 and 5-0.
The wins improve the Hawks to 10-15 on the season.
Shorter got off to an early start, scoring one run in the first inning of Game 1 when Michael Miranda singled to bring in Charlie Gillis. Albany State answered with one of their own in the top of the second to tie the game at one each. However, the Hawks scored twice in the bottom of the inning to take back the lead, 3-1, on a 2-run single by Gillis.
The Rams took advantage of a couple Shorter miscues to gain the 4-3 advantage in the fourth inning, but the lead was short lived as the Hawks added two runs in the bottom of the inning. Jacob Forrest singled to lead off the inning, and came around to score on a two-run homer by Darrius Jennings for the final 5-4 score.
Eric Doty earned the win for Shorter in Game 1, going 6.0 innings, allowing 6 hits, with four strikeouts. Ben Stell came on in relief, pitching the final inning, and earning the save. He allowed no hits and struck out two.
Game 2, remained scoreless until the fifth inning, when Shorter put a four spot on the board. Chad Ikerd led off the inning with a double, followed by bunt single from Dustin Evans. With one out, Gillis' RBI double scored Ikerd from third. Willie Lewis followed with a 3-run blast to give the Hawks the 4-0 lead. Gillis added another RBI in the sixth for the final 5-0 score.
Russell Crosby went the distance for Shorter in the nightcap pitching a complete game shutout to pick up his second win of the season. Over the course of seven innings, Crosby, gave up five hits while striking out six.
Gillis finished the day with three hits and four RBI—two in each game—to give the Hawks the advantage.
Shorter returns to GSC action this weekend, March 23 and 24, as they travel to Valdosta State for a three game series. The Saturday doubleheader is set to begin at 3pm, with Sunday's game slated to begin at 1pm.
