Karen Allen named Sports Information Director

ROME--For the past seven years, Karen Allen has come to know a lot about Shorter University, first as a student who after earning her bachelor’s degree became a multi-role graduate assistant while she obtained her master’s diploma.

Now the native of Mableton, Ga., has been given the responsibility to spread the word about Shorter and its athletic teams as Shorter Director of Athletics Bill Peterson has named Allen as the university’s Sports Information Director.

“Karen has worked here at Shorter in a variety of positions,” Peterson said of Allen, who has been Shorter’s interim SID since April. “She loves this university and what it stands for and will be a great addition to the athletic team.

“She is creative, hardworking and a real plus for our program,” he added. “We are just delighted.”

“I’m grateful to Coach Pete and Shorter for giving me this opportunity,” said Allen, “and I’m excited about it and where it will take me in the future.”

There’s little doubt that Allen’s past at Shorter established a dedicated foundation for her, one that included a strong cornerstone that came by way of a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a major in Sports Management; which she earned in 2009.

Her ties with Shorter didn’t end there.

While pursuing a master’s degree in Business Administration that she obtained in 2012, Allen not only served as a graduate assistant within the athletic department handling business and accounting responsibilities, she worked in Shorter’s admissions and business offices.

Allen served as the ticket manager for the Rome Braves in 2012, but returned to Shorter last October on a part-time basis working with the business side of the athletic department before assuming the interim SID role.

“Having been a student here and a part of the community has meant so much to me,” said Allen, “and now I’ll be able to help show others what the university and its athletics are all about.”
